Moving is hard, change is good? (Right?)
Hi friends!
Thanks for following me/my art news by signing up for quarterly updates.
(Or if you didn’t, you can unsubscribe anytime at the bottom of this note.)
For those of you who get my (mostly) quarterly updates via Mailchimp, now they come from here.
After lots of research and tinkering around, this space seems more dynamic, streamlined (at least the newsletter interface itself) and writer-centric.
Less worrying about setting up pristine templates. Phew!
A Substack publication will also help me bring back blog-like posts about my process and pedagogical experiments, and share updates on the newfangled Boise Playwrights Collective I’ve been (slow) growing with dramatists in the Southwest Idaho region.
You don’t have to get updates about those other projects too, unless you wanna. You can adjust which kinds of posts come to your inbox here (if I did that right—you can let me know if that doesn’t link to a “manage your subscription” page via the message button below).
(For now, unless you’re already a member of the Boise Playwrights Collective, you’re only subscribed to these quarterly Arts News updates.)

What’s with the whole publication platform thing?
On this site, I intend to build a space where people can see what I’m working on/thinking about in-process and where we can cross-pollinate ways to generate material. I’m delighted to learn from you while you see me learning and making in public. I’m excited for the possibilities of this new playground.
This publication too is in process (I’m very much learning) and will definitely be slow growing. Thanks for your patience as I figure out this new platform.
Wait, so how much email is Heidi sending me now?
If you stay subscribed to my Arts News section, and only that section, these updates should still come to your inbox about once a quarter, give or take.
If you decide to subscribe to any of other sections, you’ll get posts in your inbox more often. I’m still deciding what that schedule might be, for each section. Maybe once a week for Experiments and Let’s Make Stuff, alternating between those, maybe once a month for the Boise Playwrights Collective…
That may be WAY more ambitious than I can do, though, especially when fall semester hits. And I don’t want to overwhelm your inbox. Know that I’ll only post some things online, instead of sending them to email. All that said, I hope the general timelines above give you an idea about what might fit your bandwidth.
I’ll get clearer and more specific as I go, I’m sure.
Some names, titles, layouts, plans may change.
I’ll make plenty of mistakes over the next few months+ as I learn.
And then learn/revise/shift from there. Everything in-process.
Thanks for your patience!
I’ll figure out when/how I want to implement paid subscriptions.
For now, I’ll keep it free.
You’re welcome to pledge your support (thank you!).
I think these Arts News updates will always be free.
I wanted to get you all this update now though, before I’ve figured all that out.
Because it’s been a while since I said hello.
I didn’t want to keep you waiting any longer.
All of that was intended to bring you up-to-speed on why:
This newsletter update looks a lot different than my typical mailings, and
This email comes from a different place.
Thanks for reading! Three free offerings:
I’ll leave you with these little free gems from spring and summer, in case you haven’t seen them elsewhere in the internet world:
“Dear Now”
This poem got published in the Writing for Change Journal in late spring, in their Letters to Tomorrow collection.
“the absence of faraway”
This poem got published in The Soliloquist Journal’s summer edition.
This link will take you to the poem in the e-Book. (Or if it doesn’t, it’s on page 99.)
This link will take you to purchase the paperback, if you like.
TrapDoor: A multi-dimensional romp across space/time
This play got a reading through the Valdez Theatre Conference in June—one of my favorite places to go as a playwright! I thought the video would only be available to stream through July, but looks like it’s still up.
If you haven’t seen this rendition yet (thanks to the 70 who watched so far!), you might still get a chance. (It could be that it gets taken down before you open this note, but hey, I tried—albeit a late announcement to you dear ones.)
I’ve been doing loads of revision on this script since the conference, so if you ever see the play in the future, it’ll look different.
Okay, that’s where I’ll leave you, for now!
Thank you so much, truly, for your support over the years.
If you decide to stick around for this new phase, thanks dearly!
You might take a few steps to make sure these don’t end up in your spam folder.
The publication is very new and under construction, but if you’re curious you can check out some recent/previous quarterly and blog posts in the archive, too, while I’m learning the basics and getting stuff organized.
If you decide to go on your merry way and unsubscribe, no hard feelings!
You can always visit this space online or find my website to see what I’m up to.
Or see what I’m doing on ye olde Instagram and Facebook.
I’ll leave you with a conversation between me and a tree stump in Nara, Japan…
I look forward to experimenting and sharing my process with you.
Until next time.
XOXO, Heidi
